EU Reports "Alarming" Rate of Deaths Caused by Superbugs

antibiotics antimicrobials superbugs antibiotic overuse antibiotic resistance

According to a report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) there are over 25,000 death in the EU annually that is caused by superbugs. Superbugs is caused by  by the misuse and overuse of antibiotics.

There are high levels of antimicrobial resistance in bacteria from humans, animals, and food across Europe, highlighted by "extremely high" multidrug resistance in a type of Salmonella that causes illness in humans.

The summary report is based on data on antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic and indicator bacteria submitted by 28 European Union (EU) member states in 2015 and jointly analyzed by scientists from the ECDC and the EFSA. It provides an overview of resistance in Salmonella isolates from humans, food-producing animals (pigs and calves), and their meat; Campylobacter isolates from humans and pigs; and Escherichia coli isolates from pigs, calves, and their meat. Data on the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in pigs, calves, and their meat are also included.

The report shows that there were high levels of drug resistance in bacteria like salmonella and E. coli, and that some bacteria have begun to show resistance a type of antibiotics that are often the last treatment option for patients that are infected with superbugs.

The EFSA recommends three key ways to stop the spread of superbugs:
  1.     reducing the use of antimicrobials,
  2.     finding ways to replace the drugs with alternative treatments,
  3.     and rethinking the livestock production system.

A Security camera caught a daycare worker breastfeeding someone else's son. It took place at Carrboro Early School day care center in Carrboro, North Carolina on Friday February 3. The video shows a woman adjusting her top and bringing Oxendine's 3-month-old son to her chest to breastfeed him. The mother Kaycee Oxendine said she didn't give her permission.

Ms Oxendine also works as a pre-kindergarten teacher in North Carolina.

Oxendine in an interview said that her son’s teacher told her the young boy was constipated and offered to breastfeed the boy to see if it would help. Oxendine clearly told the worker no, twice. “She said that she had a son and did I want her to put my child to her breast and breastfeed?” Oxendine says. “And I said no, that’s nasty. We don’t do things like that.”

But Ms Oxendine says the worker ignored her refusal and breastfed the baby as soon as she left the room.

She says a video shows the worker picking up her baby and breastfeeding him for several seconds. The woman stopped when another worker who was in the room at the time, left.

“As a mum, you’ve taken something from me, because I wasn’t able to defend my child,” Oxendine says.

The said the boy also got sick after drinking the breast milk later that night. The boy was taken to a hospital because he was throwing up. She says her son, who was born prematurely, is lactose intolerant.

“To me, a criminal act was committed against him,” she said. “Not only did you put your breast to my son, you also made my son sick because he’s lactose. So you’ve put something in his body that his body can’t digest.”

The daycare director, Daron Council, told sister station ABC11 that an employee reported what happened and that the worker who did the breastfeeding is no longer there.

Kaycee wants her to face criminal charges.
