Antidepressants During Pregnancy Increase the Risk of Autism

Antidepressants, Pregnancy, Autism risks

According to a new study, women who take a certain class of widely used antidepressants during their 2nd and 3rd trimesters of pregnancy may face almost twice the risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder.

The new research was published last Monday December 14, 2015 in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) Pediatrics. They studied 145,456 kids in Quebec that were born between 1998 and 2009, to determine if children of mothers who took antidepressants while pregnant were at an increased risk of developing an autism disorder. This is among the strongest findings linking antidepressant use in pregnancy to poor outcomes in the children born of those pregnancies.

Researchers found that the children of mothers who took antidepressants later in pregnancy were at an 87% higher risk to develop autism than those without exposure. Of the 2,532 children who fell into this category, 31 were diagnosed with autism (1.2%). Second and third trimester are a crucial time for brain development in the fetus.

The risk was even higher for children of mothers who are taking the most common form of antidepressants, called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). They had a 117% greater chance of developing an autism disorder. Outh of the 1,583 children in this category, 22 were diagnosed with autism (about 1.4%).

"Our study has established that taking antidepressants during the second or third trimester of pregnancy almost doubles the risk that the child will be diagnosed with autism by age seven, especially if the mother takes selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, often known by its acronym SSRIs," according to the lead researcher Anick Berard, an expert on pharmaceutical safety during pregnancy at the University of Montreal.

SSRIs are the most commonly prescribed anti-depressants, and include brand names such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft.

As many as one in 45 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in the United States, according to a recent study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Scientists still do not fully understand what causes autism, though both genetics and environment are believed to play a role.

Researchers said their findings are significant because as many as 10% of pregnant women are currently being treated with antidepressants. However, experts also stressed that no pregnant woman currently on antidepressants should stop treatment without talking to her physician first. They also said that pregnant women who are untreated for depression faced other risk factors in their pregnancy.

Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a pediatric neurologist at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, said pregnant women on SSRIs should not stop taking their medication without more study and information.

"The absolute risk is still low and the odds are overwhelmingly in their favor that it’s low," Wiznitzer said of the chance of a child developing autism after his or her mother took an SSRI.

Burnt Toast and Crispy potatoes increase risk of cancer

Burnt Toast cancer, crispy potatoes cancer

Burnt Toast cancer, crispy potatoes cancer

A new study by the British government's Food Standards Agency (FSA) reported that burnt toast and other highly crispy food contains high amounts of cancer-causing toxin called acrylamide. Acrylamide are chemicals that are produced naturally as a result of cooking starch-rich food at high temperatures like frying or baking. It is also likely to be produced by grilling and roasting food.

"Some foods are rich in acrylamide due to the way they are produced. Further cooking of carbohydrate rich foods, for example the grilling of bread to make toast, causes more acrylamide to be produced. This browning process is indicative of acrylamide production, levels are higher in well cooked dark brown chips compared to lighter brown cooked chips," quoting the report.

The amount of acrylamide produced depends on how long and how high is the temperature in cooking the food. Long duration and high temperatures form more acrylamide than short duration and lower temperatures.

The study is performed using 50 households. They took food samples from each household and measured their acrylamide levels in a lab. They found that 9 micrograms per kilogram of acrylamide in the palest piece of toast, while the darkest piece had 167. Fries contained more than 1,000 micrograms per kilogram of acrylamide.

The study said that regular eating of food that contains the cancer-causing natural by-product of cooking process can increase the risk of cancer.

WHO: Cancer Causing Food Includes Bacon, hotdog, ham, red meat, sausage, cold cuts, and other processed meat

World Health Organization cancer, cancer causing food

World Health Organization warn the public about eating too much cancer causing food, included on their list are Bacon, hotdog, ham, sausage, cold cuts, and other processed meat (corned beef, luncheon meat, beef jerky, beefloaf). Also included on the list are read meat (beef, pork, veal, mutton, horse and goat), specially if they are cooked in high temperatures or pan-fried since it releases higher amounts of chemicals that can cause colon and stomach cancers.

WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France, placed processed meat in the same category as smoking or asbestos that has a confirmed link in causing cancer.

When a meat are cooked in direct contact with a flame or at high temperatures the meat produces carcinogens. The study also suggest that daily consumption of 1.75 ounces (50 gram) of processed meat can increase the risk of developing a colorectal cancer by 18%

However, according to Cancer.gov other food like fish and poultry that are cooked using high-temperature methods (pan-fried or grilling) especially above 300ºF can also form Heterocyclic amines (HCAs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Through experiments it has been found that, HCAs and PAHs are mutagenic that is, they cause changes in DNA that may increase the risk of cancer.

Sleep Deprivation Linked to Risk Factors for Stroke, Diabetes and Heart Disease

Sleep Deprivation, no sleep, can't sleep, health

According to a recent study, those who are getting less than 6 hours of sleep are more likely to increase their chances to develop diabetes, heart disease and strokes.

The clustering of risk factors that includes high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high serum triglycerides, abdominal (central) obesity, and high blood pressure is known as metabolic syndrome.

Dr. Jang Young Kim of Yonsei University in South Korea  said that the people who lacks sleep should be aware of the risks of developing metabolic syndrome, which could lead them to suffer from life threatening and chronic diseases."

Their research is composed of 2,600 adults they were studied for more than 2 years and found that participants who didn’t get at least 6 hours of sleep a night were 41% more likely to develop metabolic syndrome than individuals who got 6 to 8 hours of sleep. The subjects underwent medical exams and shared their medical history.

The team followed up on the subjects after 2 and half years and 560 (22%) of them developed metabolic syndrome. Sleep deprivation was linked to about 30% increased risk of high blood sugar and excess belly fat, as well as 56% higher odds of hypertension, compared to those who have ample sleep.

GMO’s in Meat

GMO, GMO food

Despite concerns and red flags about genetically modified foods and crops, the use of GMOs in farming has been on an upsurge yearly since the GMO was commercially introduction in 1996. According to the ISAAA, an international organization that supports crop biotechnology, biotech crops have increased 100-fold, from 1.7 million hectares (4.2 million acres) in 1996, to 170 million hectares (420 million acres) in 2012. These 170 million hectares mean that GMO crops now occupy over 10% of the world’s arable land.

The United States is the world’s top GMO producer and consumer. Most of the GMO crop are fed to livestock. Top  6 GMO crops are soy, cotton, corn, canola, sugar beet, and alfalfa. They are heavily utilized by the US and global animal feed market.

Feeding cattle genetically modified (GMO) crops is unhealthy for the animals and results in unsafe beef.

GMOs are not yet proven safe for human consumption. Many studies claiming the safety of GE-foods are industry-funded and only last for 90 days.

There are also reports that scientists in China have created genetically modified cattle designed to produce tastier beef.

Saturated Fats are Good in Moderation

Saturated Fats, food, health

There are a lot of products that say low or zero fat and people think in an instant that they are healthy because it keep them fit and keep their heart healthy. However, that is not entirely true. The
McMaster University in Canada did not find any link between the amount of saturated fat people ate and their risk of death from heart disease, stroke or Type 2 diabetes. Also there are dietitians that advice people to take in more good fats in our diet.

Food products don't differentiate between good fats and bad fats, so buying food that are zero or low fat is not wise and can harm your health.

Dr. John Briffa of The Cholesterol Truth  said that the mainstream focusing on the dangers of saturated fat are absurdly exaggerated. These means you should not follow the advice of some health advocate or fad diet to cut down on saturated fats just eat in moderation. Eating butter is not bad if taken in moderately since it is rich in saturated fats, vitamins, cholesterol that is important for brain and nervous system development and various natural compounds with anti-fungal, antioxidant and even anti-cancer properties.

If you remove saturated fats from your diet, you will be missing the health benefits that it can give you like vitamins D, E, K, and A. People should know the differences between good and bad dietary fats.

Fats that are bad for you are Trans-fats (Hydrogenated fats) since they are dense and can block your coronary arteries. These fats are made through "hydrogenation" which is a food manufacturing process in which oils are turned from liquid to solid at high temperatures. They add hydrogen atom to the oil molecule which will turn the oil solid.

This fat also increase the level of LDL which are bad cholesterol in our blood, it also lower the HDL which are good cholesterol.

Low-fat diet is Better than Low carb Diet

Low-fat diet, Low carb Diet, health, fitness

It is often debated among health enthusiast which is better Low-fat diet or Low carb diet both offers a good lifestyle and better health however a new study shows that restricting dietary fat can lead to greater weight loss loss than carbohydrate restriction, even though a low-carb diet reduces insulin and increases fat burning.

The study was published at Cell Metabolism journal. According to one of the researchers Kevin Hall from National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases"A lot of people have very strong opinions about what matters for weight loss, and the physiological data upon which those beliefs are based are sometimes lacking. I wanted to rigorously test the theory that carbohydrate restriction is particularly effective for losing body fat since this idea has been influencing many people's decisions about their diets."

For the research, they use 19 adults that suffers from obesity they confine them to a metabolic ward for two dieting periods of two weeks each. After two dieting periods, they have found that body fat lost under the Low-fat diet was better than with Low carb Diet even though more fat was burned with the low-carb diet.

Body fat loss was calculated using the difference between daily fat intake and net fat oxidation while participants were inside a metabolic chamber.

Sniffing Test That Detects Autism

Autism, detect autism, sniffing test

A new study has found that it may be possible to detect autism in children by measuring their reaction to odors.

According to the National Autistic Society smell test can become another tool to detect autism. Liron Rozenkrantz a researcher said children normally altered the depth of their sniffing to the odors, he added that children with autism didn't show this modulation at all, they took the same sniff for the smell of fragrance as they did for rotten food. Autistic children do not make the distinction of the odor.

The study is published in the journal Current Biology. Researchers timed the reaction of children to pleasant and unpleasant odor, using a device called an olfactometer that gave the subjects different scents through a small tube that fit into nostrils. Another tube measures how much air the children were breathing in as they were exposed to each odor.

The study used a small sample group, that is composed of 36 children, with 18 diagnosed with autism. The children were exposed to smells that includes sour milk, rotten fish, soap and roses. Typically developing children adjusted their sniffing very quickly about 305 milliseconds while children diagnosed with autism reacted much slower.

Health Benefits in Quitting Diet Soda

Diet Soda Infographics, diet soda unhealthy, quit diet soda

Experts said that giving up diet soda will improve your overall health.

- It will help you think clearly since artificial sweetener aspartame disrupts brain chemicals, nerve signals that can lead to headaches, anxiety, and insomnia, in a study done by the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

- You'll taste your food better since drinking diet soda with artificial sweeteners overwhelmed your taste buds with sweets and alters sweet receptors in your brain that prolongs sugar cravings rather than satisfies them.

Heather Bainbridge, RD, from Columbia University Medical Center Weight Control Center said:

“We often see patients change snack choices when they give up diet soda. Rather than needing sugary treats or something really salty like pretzels and chips, they reach for an apple and a piece of cheese. And, when they try diet soda again, they find it intolerably sweet."

- It will help you lose weight. Despite being diet soda with no sugar in it, drinking daily will increase your chance of becoming obese in the next decade by 65% according to Diabetes Care since it is connected to an increase in metabolic syndrome—obesity, high blood-pressure, high triglycerides—which leads to heart disease and diabetes.

- Improve your kidney function. When you get rid of unhealthy ingredients in diet soda, your kidneys will be clearing toxins, stabilizing blood pressure, and absorbing minerals.

Herpes Virus Causes Disgusting Blister Finger Infection

Blister Finger Infection, herpes
Blister Finger Infection, herpes

Live Science reports a 23 years old man consulted his doctors for his finger that has blisters, doctors diagnosed that the cause is not bacteria but herpes virus which usually affects the genitals or causes cold sores around the mouth. Sometimes this virus can infect the fingertip, the condition is called herpetic whitlow.

Experts said that herpetic whitlow infections poses a serious risk if not treated immediately or if improperly treated since it can lead to complications such as herpetic encephalitis, which is a herpes infection that attacks brain. Expert said that bacterial and herpetic whitlow requires a different treatment.

The symptoms of a herpes virus infection usually subside on their own, but the virus hibernates within the body's nerve cells. If the person with herpes virus experience some triggers, like stress it become active again, that results to outbreaks.

Whitlow propagate in warm, moist environments. People who suspect they have whitlow should have it checked by a doctor immediately, since the infection can spread to the whole hand, and sometimes even to the tendon, which is very hard to treat and will generally require surgery of the hand.

“If a gay couple came in and wanted us to provide pizzas for their wedding, we would have to say no, we are a Christian establishment.” “We definitely agree with the bill.”

She believes that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, don't targets gays or discriminates them but instead protects businesses like hers who have a religious belief.

Her father said, “That’s a lifestyle that you choose, I choose to be heterosexual, they choose to be homosexual. why should I be beat over the head because they choose that lifestyle?”

Co-owner Kevin O’Connor said that the Pizzeria will be closed temporarily until things cools down.

Just visit their Yelp page here, you'll see the Gay-ISIS attacking the owner. I'm not anti-gay but sorry I can't accept people bullying just because they have different beliefs.

Caramel Color in Soda can Cause Cancer

soda caramel color cancer, cancer coke, cancer pepsi, caramel color cancer

There is a new discovery that link the soda's caramel color to cancer. Many experts believe that some ingredients in soda can cause fatal disease but there are no direct link, however this time researchers found a direct link between caramel color and cancer.

A study from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health that was published in PLOS ONE journal with a title "Caramel Color in Soft Drinks and Exposure to 4-Methylimidazole: A Quantitative Risk Assessment." The research team use a sample from 110 brands of different sodas with caramel coloring and they have found different levels of 4-Methylimidazole (4-MEI). 4-Methylimidazole (4-MEI) gives the dark brown color for soda drinks like Coke and Pepsi. What they have found out is that most of the sodas contained dangerous levels of 4-MEI, which could ultimately lead to a high caramel color cancer risk.

Based on a data research about 57% of people drink a can of soda per day, which heighten the danger of over-consumption of the carcinogen.

PhD Keeve Nachman, the lead researcher of the study, said "Soft drink consumers are being exposed to an avoidable and unnecessary cancer risk from an ingredient that is being added to these beverages simply for aesthetic purposes. This unnecessary exposure poses a threat to public health and raises questions about the continued use of caramel coloring in soda."

They will be presenting the their study at the 67th annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology in Washington, D.C., that will be held on April 18 to 25, 2015.

Dr. Ellen Mowry, assistant professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins University let the team which examine two studies, from Sweden and another from the United States. Included in both study are people with MS and people without MS.

The study from Sweden is composed of 1,629 people with MS and 2,807 those without MS. While the U.S. counterpart is composed of 1,159 people with MS and 1,172 without.

The results of the study from Sweden, the people who didn't consume coffee had 1 and a half times increased risk of developing MS compared to people who regularly drinks coffee of at least 6 cups a day during the year before symptoms appeared. Drinking large amounts of coffee 5 or 10 years before symptoms started was similarly protective.

while in the US study, those who don't drink coffee were also about 1 and a half times more likely to develop MS compared to those who drink four or more cups of coffee a day in the year before symptoms started to develop MS.

Tobacco is the Deadliest Substance in the US

It might surprise you but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data Tobacco is the deadliest substance in the United States followed by Alcohol, opioid-based prescription painkillers, cocaine, and heroin. Both tobacco and alcohol are easily available which makes them deadly, while Heroin-linked deaths though illegal is shooting up topping 8,200 in 2013.

According to CDC tobacco is linked to one in five (5) deaths in the US each year, about 42,000 of the 480,000 deaths are caused by secondhand smoke. Even though data shows that tobacco use has declined over the years because of information campaigns, mandatory warning labels, public and workplace smoking bans, and higher taxes on tobacco products.

Alcohol related deaths which is at over 26,000 deaths in 2011 are mostly caused by liver failure and other health problems. However, if you include deaths due to drunk driving it will shoot up to 88,000 per year.

Excessive drinking also accounts to other problems like alcohol-induced aggression and erratic behavior. 40% of violent crimes are done by people who are in the influence of alcohol, according to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Experts says that to lessen this, alcohol should be regulated and taxed higher to reduce consumption.

Opioid-based prescription painkillers is directly linked to overdose deaths, CDC said that 31% of prescription painkiller-linked overdose deaths in 2011 are due to benzodiazepines, which is an anti-anxiety drug.

Very Generous Parents donate baby's organs

Parents of a 6-day old baby who died agreed to donate her organs for transplantation, a first in British medical Hospital. Doctors said that this will give hope to hundreds of other newborn babies and older children.

The transplant was done by a medical team at Hammersmith Hospital in London from a tiny newborn baby, that involves her kidneys and liver cells. The donor was a baby girl born at term after an emergency caesarean section. The baby was very sick since her brain had been starved of oxygen for a long period during the pregnancy that damaged her brain and was not able to respond to any stimuli. She weighed almost 3.2kg.

The doctor who attended to the baby, Gaurav Atreja, said, "It's extremely hard to put into words, the nature of my job". He said he was "very factual with the parents" and that "they showed their keenness and came back very quickly" to agree to the transplant.

Her parents gave consent to the hospital for organ donation, and 6 days after she was born when the death had been confirmed, the organs were retrieved with the help of an experienced surgeon from the National Organ Retrieval Service.

The baby's kidneys, only 3.8cm long, were about a third the size of an adult's, doctors said, but such organs are normally fully functioning after only about 37 weeks of pregnancy.

The researchers hope that this will help revolutionize a new way of thinking about neonatal organ donation.

The incoming Tropical Storm named Mekkhala has 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour winds, the storm suspended ferry services to Leyte and stranded thousands of travelers including some who wanted to see the pope.

Government officials estimated the crowd at 150,000 before the pope's arrival and said there were thousands more outside the airport.
